李元普强调：“作为技术推广单位，我们不仅仅要教会设备管理人员如何开启设备，更要传授他们如何运行设备，提高设备运行效率。这一点在去年北京六一幼儿院项目中我们体会很深。”
从系统结构上讲，土-气型地源热泵是分散式系统，在设计时可根据建筑物的使用功能及不同使用时间进行合理的区域划分，进行机组选型。这样在系统运行过程中，能根据各个区域的使用情况单独开启或停止机组的运行，从而实现能源利用优化。
北京六一幼儿院项目属于锅炉改造工程，包括教室、办公室、食堂等总建筑面积14849.1平方米，采暖空调面积12119平方米，选用了McQuay公司的83台地源热泵机组。项目于2004年9月建成，11月起运行。
运行一开始，幼儿院全院正常使用。但春节放假后，只需要向一小部分建筑物供暖。由于在系统设计中考虑到建筑的使用功能，假期时可按区域需要使用系统，这样幼儿院在寒假时比使用锅炉节不少采暖费用。
李元普认为，从建设示范工程入手是推广全新节能技术的有效途径，用示范工程的运行数据说明这种技术的先进性、环保性、节能性，会缩短人们对新事物的认知过程，会起到事半功倍的作用。他表示，他和他的团队还将加大示范工程建设的力度和数量，尤其是要建设一些不同建筑类型、不同规模、不同功能的、特别是成片的区域应用示范工程，以满足多样化的市场需求，开创地源热泵技术推广新局面。
